Newsletter 7/5/17}
Hello Y'all,
Summer finally got here and the tomatoes are blooming (thank Goodness!)  We enjoyed a bumper crop of bing cherries as did every bird within a 50 mile radius, or so it seemed.  But, a little warm weather doesn't keep us from thinking about or actually working on a quilt!

Let's talk about Joe!

I think I mentioned in the last newsletter that Joe Cunningham, our nationally featured quilter, is also an accomplished musician.  Soooo, we asked him to put that talent together with a show and share more of his quilts with us.  He has agreed and will be doing just that on Saturday, September 16, 7 pm at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel, 550 West Rose, Walla Walla.  The seating is limited to the first 200 people. Admission will be $5.00. You may get tickets at Stash, Walla Walla Sew N Vac & Spas, myself or other Committee members.  If you choose me as an option just mail your check (see my address down below), number of tickets and an address where to send them.  Once the 200 are sold, no more will be available.  So get them early.

And date reminders again:

Please plan on attending and bring your friends, relatives, and your neighbors.  Your attendance will help keep us going another year!

The admission price for the Festival is $6.00.  This one-time fee covers all weekend at the Festival.  (The Saturday night show with Joe is separate!)  BUT...the good news is that your admission fee includes a ticket for the award of a really nice upscale steam iron and ironing board.  And...You do not have to be present to win.  I am excited about this wonderful prize, and believe it, I have had a hard time keeping my hands off.

Challenge & Block Lotto:

The theme for this year's Festival Challenge is "Paint the Town Red".  The full set of rules are on the website, but generally speaking the entry can't be more than 160" in perimeter, any design or fabric that you choose.  Do not forget to put a cloth label on your entry.  And you may enter as many times as you wish.  There's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prize money to be awarded.  So get your thinking caps on and start sewing!

The Block Lotto fabric is available from Kay Fortner.  You may contact Kay directly  at kay.fortner@yahoo.com or 541-218-0313.  Create a 12" (12 1/2" unfinished) block in the pattern of your choosing, using some of the fabric.  The winner will be chosen by the people and that lucky person takes home all the blocks!

Silent Auction Quilt(s):

We will also have a large red and white silent auction quilt for your bid.  This would be a welcome addition to any room, and is a lovely quilt.

Also we will have several smaller quilts - baby quits, lap size, wall hangings, etc for sale.  So bring your pocket books and take home a lovely quilt.

Tips and Tricks:

Summer weather and warmer temps make for some great swimming.  And out come the swim toys, including the pool noodles.  But, I have found another great use for them.  I wrap the noodle in some cheap muslin then pin my smaller quilts to them, wrap to the bottom and pin again.  You can then wrap in another piece of muslin if you are concerned about dust or other things.  BINGO!  No wrinkles and the space they take up is minimal!  (Space for more quilts!)

I recently tried the "Quilter's Juice" , an alternative to starch after fabric has been washed.  My version did include vodka as well as some liquid starch and water.  You may remember that I like my fabric heavily starched.  This did not fill that bill.  I think I might like for pressing after the top or block is together, but not for the initial ironing, and sewing.  For whatever it may be worth (hic!)

A must for any quilter's area is a magnet to find those stray pins and needles.  I have a collapsible magnet that I use frequently.  Sure saves the back and crawling around on the floor which I don't do so well anymore.  And they aren't that expensive!

The area where I keep my bobbins was really becoming a mess of tangled threads, I solved by my extravagent purchase of 18" of clear plastic tubing that had a dimension of 3/8" INSIDE.  You can cut into widths just a bit smaller than the width of your bobbin, cut across and then slip onto the loose end of your thread on the bobbin.  Tangles tamed!

And That's All Folks:

Sewing room is calling - as is laundry and other minor details.  Y'all enjoy the warmer weather.  If it gets to be a bit much, just remember how it felt to wade around in 3+ feet of snow and ice!

And please share this newsletter with everyone!
